How to Play Bingo

Bingo has a friendly reputation. It is played in community halls, at charity nights and in online rooms with chat windows, and for many people the social side matters as much as the prizes. When money is involved, though, it is still a form of gambling with a cost built in. This guide covers how the main versions work and what is going on behind the prize board. It is meant for readers aged 18 and over.
The common thread
Every bingo game follows the same loop. Players buy cards or tickets printed with numbers. A caller, or a random number generator online, draws numbers one at a time. Players mark off any number that appears on their card. Whoever finishes the announced pattern first calls out, the card is checked, and the prize is paid. Then a new game begins.
75-ball bingo
This is the version most common in North America. Each card is a five-by-five grid with the letters B, I, N, G and O across the top. Each column draws from its own range of numbers:
| Column | Numbers |
|---|---|
| B | 1–15 |
| I | 16–30 |
| N | 31–45 (centre square is a free space) |
| G | 46–60 |
| O | 61–75 |
The caller announces each ball with its letter, such as "G 52", which makes it quicker to find on a card. Before each game the hall announces the winning pattern:
- A straight line across, down or diagonally.
- Four corners of the card.
- Shapes such as a letter, a frame or a small square.
- Blackout or coverall, where every square must be marked.
90-ball bingo
The version played across the UK, Ireland and Australia uses tickets with three rows and nine columns. Each row holds five numbers and four blanks, so a ticket carries 15 numbers. The first column covers 1–9, the next 10–19, and so on up to 90. Halls often sell tickets as a strip of six, arranged so that each number from 1 to 90 appears exactly once across the strip. A single game usually pays three prizes in turn:
- One line: any complete horizontal row.
- Two lines: any two rows on the same ticket.
- Full house: all 15 numbers.
Callers in these halls often use traditional nicknames for numbers, a playful habit that has no bearing on the result.
Other formats
Online rooms also run 80-ball games on four-by-four cards and fast 30-ball games on tiny three-by-three cards. Many sites offer an auto-daub setting that marks numbers for you, which removes the risk of missing a call but also speeds up play.
Calling bingo and checking the card
In a hall, you call out clearly as soon as your pattern is complete, before the next number is drawn. A staff member reads your numbers back and confirms the win. If two or more players complete the pattern on the same number, the prize is usually split. Online, the software checks every card automatically and pays the winner within moments.
Where the prize money comes from
Bingo prizes are generally funded from ticket sales. The operator sets aside part of the money as the prize pool and keeps the rest to cover costs and profit, or passes it to a cause at charity games. So the deal you get depends on two things: how much of the ticket money goes back as prizes, and how many cards are in play. If a room is busy, the prize may be larger, but your chance of being first to finish falls with every card in the game. Buying more cards raises your chance in a given game, and it raises your spend at exactly the same time.
Keno, bingo's closest cousin in the casino, works on fixed pay tables rather than shared pools. Our guide on how to play keno explains that difference in detail.
Habits for an enjoyable session
- Check the game's rules, ticket price and prize structure before buying in.
- Decide how many cards you can follow comfortably, and how much you will spend in total.
- Watch out for back-to-back fast games online; they turn a relaxed evening into rapid spending.
- Count chat, company and the game itself as the main reward, not the prize.
Bingo is a pastime with a price, and a win is a pleasant surprise rather than a plan. Set your limits before the first number is called, and if bingo begins to take more money or time than you intended, take a break and read our thoughts on playing with caution.
